Small businesses and networking

Yesterday I meet one of my middle age friends that I have not seen for a long time. We were very excited to see each other after so long. However, she informed me about her new adventure in her life. She told me that, she has the most advance computer equipments at home, that she wants to use them for her new small business “Networking” that is not yet established. I must admit that, she has an insignificant knowledge about technologies and networking.

However, I asked her few simple questions about information technology, network ing, Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0. When I finished asking her these questions, I felt that, she thought I am from another planet who is talking nonsense.

I expressed my opinion and told her that, it is wise to learn more about information technology and social networking etc. “Before you go and spend more money on these sophisticated hardware and software that might never be used for your networking business”.

I must admit that, I am not an expertise in information technology and the networking. But I have spent three semesters at University to learn about the information technology and information management. However, every time I want to assess my knowledge about this topic, I feel that “I need to learn more…………………” and advance my familiarity with the rapid development of technology and technology tools.

The point I would like to make is that; Technology is advancing rapidly and affecting people’s life “Should people invest lots of money towards establishing networking business” even if they have a very limited knowledge about it?

Will teenagers want to interact with librarians?

Many people believe that social networks can help librarians to change radically their image for a new generation. However, librarians need to consider an online social networking as an equal participant, but not a role of authority, control, or judgment. Therefore, librarians could connect with teenagers by using social networks as an outreach opportunity and not simply as a promotions tool.

Many citizens deem that by reforming the teenager’s experience and increasing accessibility, their insights will change, and they will choose to interact based upon that value.

Various communities accept as truest, while teenagers may not recognize the library as cool, they will respond if it can provide them with personal meaning.

With advance technology such as “ Markets 2.0”, Consumers can compete with suppliers as producers themselves. For example, Potential pop stars don’t need EMI or Universal Music to market their music, they can build a fan base directly on YouTube or MySpace. Creative entrepreneurs no longer need to turn to traditional sources to secure financing for their ideas and get their products to market.

In a marketplace where power has shifted to consumers, everybody can be a producer.

Enterprise 2.0

In the workplace, Web 2.0 tools promise to revive establishment such as businesses and libraries by utilizing collective intelligence. Social networks, wikis, mashups, blogs and RSS feeds can facilitate networked conversations, information – sharing and problem – solving.

Strict hierarchies, corporate silos and walled – off R & D departments can be ripped down and replaced by transparent, open – ended “ crowd sourcing ” strategies that even bring customers into the collaborative dialogue. Power is shifting from executive C – suites to employee cubicles, from companies to customers, from monopolists to markets.

The potential upside: improved morale, enhanced collective knowledge, increased productivity, sharpened strategic focus, greater innovation. And on the bottom line, higher profits.

What exactly is the internet and is it different from the World Wide Web?

When I see someone from my generation (late 1950s-early 1970s), and they ask me ” what I am doing these days”? I reply that, I am back at University. studying “Master of information management” and one of my unit is enterprise 2.0. They say “what” with an open mouth.

So this post is for the people who are interested about inside the internet, the World Wide Web, web 2.0 and enterprise 2.0.

Internet is an international network made up of smaller computer networks all over the world. The internet is a vast database of information that can be used by everyone. Millions of individuals have got the bug and personal e-mail addresses at home too. However , e-mails are just the tip of the iceberg. The average user surfs the Net to do many things – download a book trailer, film trailer for the latest book or movie, buy some goods, check out share prices, play a game, book a flight, listen to the radio, or simply look up the answer to a question that has been bother him or her for some time.

World Wide Web is a system of finding your way around and accessing all the information stored on the computers of the internet. The Web system works by using ‘hypertext’ links within Web pages. These can occur anywhere within a web page. The World Wide Web was the brainchild of Time Berners-Lee, who studied physics at Oxford in 1970s, He developed a computer system to help physicists share information stored on different computers and named it Enquire Within Upon Everything, After the title of a Victorian encyclopaedia. Berners-Lee was determined to keep his invention pure, away from commercial business concerns in order not to detract the web’s purpose of facilitating the sharing of knowledge and so made it free for everyone to use.

It is estimated that the power of computers has increased by 1200 times over the last ten years, and that the same will happen over next ten years.

Is Web 2.0 different from the World Wide Web?

Web 2.0 is described by Wikipedia as referring to “a second generation of services available on the web that lets people collaborate and share information online”.Web 2.0 is about creating richer user experiences through providing interactive tools and services. however, there are some concern about the implemetation of Web 2.0 within organizations, such as scalability, longevity of services, commercial issues and strategy issues.

What about Enterprise 2.0

Andrew McAfee a research scientist defines Enterprise 2.0 as ” the use of emergent social software platforms within companies, or between companies and their partners or customers. ” However, Author of the book “The Next Wave of Technology”. Phil Simon, In this book defines Enterprise 2.0 as ” Enterprise 2.0 encompassess emerging technologies such as software as a services, mobility, enterprise search and retrieval, business intelligence, not just social networking and other collaborative tools.

It is quite clear that, the twenty first century generation, who are engaged with technology 24/7, are no longer interested on using uncommunicative floors and tedious cotalog searching of the academic/local libraries.

However, they are attentive to technology and they love their room as long as it is occupied with Laptop, Mobile phone and TV. They are happy to spend hours to search their fevered search engine Google for their information needs, Mobil for texting, customise Facebook for social networking and fast delivery food for their diner etc……………………..

However, the question is;

“How can the traditional librarians attract this generation to their long-established premises, while “Web 2.0 and enterprise 2.0 are taking over their roles???

Week 6 Reflection

Enterprise 2.0 is one of my elective units and I had no idea that what kind of challenges are before me when I elected this subject.

At the commencement of the semester, I had a very limited knowledge about web 2.0. However, during last few weeks I have learned that organizations (large or small) can benefit and grow by using web 2.0 tools. Therefore, businesses need to be aware of web 2.0 and enterprise 2.0 in order to remain pertinent in the online ambiance. The use of web 2.0 tools can help establishments by:

Web 2.0 properties such as search engines, blogs and wikkis can give corporation opportunities to market their services, communicate with clientele and other professionals.
Web 2.0 resources enables’ organizations to ask for feedback and suggestion, and respond to them promptly.
Web 2.0 applications allow isolated groups to work together and share knowledge.

Also, I have learned that organizations as well as society as whole can benefit from enterprise 2.0 applications such as Twitter and face book. For instance, twitter is a social networking site that allows users to post small tweets of up to 140 characters. IT lets users join networks and form friendships, and also works with mobile phones and other SMS tools. Twitters networking functions lets one user to make connections with their followers, which is a good way to develop new networks and relationships.

Facebook is a social networking site that allows its members to develop networks and relationships with like-minded people.

In regarding the role and influence of new and emerging web application and digital technology within the contemporary organization, according to (Simon, P. Second book, The Next Wave of Technology), he defines enterprise 2.0 as an appliance that encompasses emerging technologies, such as social networking, collaborative tools, software as a service, mobility, enterprise search and retrieval and business intelligence. It is seven weeks into the term and this is my first comment on my first wordpress blog. I am a very leisurely beginner and expeditious novice. I am a very fortunate person who has been experiencing three different cultures as well as three generations of fast growing contemporary life due to technology.

During 1970 my generation was introduced to a very ordinary calculator at the high school; however, we were not allowed to use it. Educationalist believed that, “it was a device which would compromise the brainpower”. Mid seventies governess had permitted the use of the calculator at universities in order to assist students with advance calculation.

During 1980, one could remember that, It was only one computer at each faculty of the university in UK. Communications was only through letters and phone. Business documents and paper works would reach their destination after few weeks. Television was the most advance technology appliance at home.

What a change?Mobiles with camera and video camera are all over the place, internet is on 24/7, families communicate through their computers and internet in their home, e-mails are used frequently and they reach their destinations in second, face book, twitter, wiki, skype etc. are functional consistently.

So what is the Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0, What effect has in our life?
